About Unix Timestamp Converter

Convert a Unix timestamp into a readable date and time, or a date into a timestamp. It runs in your browser.

What a Unix timestamp is
It is the number of seconds since 00:00:00 UTC on 1 January 1970, a moment known as the Unix epoch. Computers use it because a single number is easy to store, sort and compare. For example, 1,800,000,000 is 08:00 UTC on 15 January 2027.

Seconds or milliseconds?
A 10-digit timestamp is in seconds. A 13-digit one is in milliseconds, which JavaScript and many APIs use. Treating milliseconds as seconds gives a date tens of thousands of years in the future — the most common mistake when reading logs or API data. Divide by 1,000 to convert.

Time zones
A timestamp has no time zone: it is the same number everywhere in the world at the same instant. The time zone only matters when you display it. 08:00 UTC is 13:00 in Pakistan (UTC+5), so always check whether a date shown to you is UTC or local time.

The year 2038
Older systems store timestamps as signed 32-bit numbers, which run out at 03:14:07 UTC on 19 January 2038. Modern systems use 64-bit values and aren't affected, but very old software and devices may need updating before then.

Common uses
Reading server logs, debugging API responses, setting expiry times for tokens and cookies, and storing dates in databases. A JWT's exp field, for example, is a Unix timestamp — decode the token with the JWT Decoder and paste the value here to see when it expires.
