Scientific Notation Converter
Enter a number in any form, such as 0.000452, 6.02e23 or 3.2 × 10^5.
Scientific notation
Very large and very small numbers are easier to read and compare written as a × 10ⁿ, where a is at least 1 and less than 10. The speed of light, 299,792,458 m/s, becomes 2.998 × 10⁸ (4 significant figures). The mass of an electron is about 9.109 × 10⁻³¹ kg.
Other forms
- E notation (2.998e8) is how calculators, Excel and programming languages show the same number.
- Engineering notation keeps the power a multiple of 3 (299.8 × 10⁶), which matches unit prefixes such as kilo, mega and micro.
Converting by hand
Move the decimal point until one non-zero digit is before it, and count the moves. Moving left gives a positive power, and moving right a negative one: 0.000452 → 4.52 × 10⁻⁴. You can type "×10^" or "e" in the box, and commas are ignored.
How it works
- Enter — type or paste your values or text.
- Get the result — it is worked out in your browser.
- Adjust — change the inputs to compare, or copy the result.
