What CLV means
Customer lifetime value is the profit you expect from a customer over the whole relationship. Here it is average order value × orders per year × gross margin, for the years the customer stays, with later years discounted. If you know churn instead of lifetime, lifetime ≈ 1 ÷ yearly churn (20% churn ≈ 5 years).
CLV vs CAC
Compare CLV with what it costs to win a customer (ads, discounts, sales time). A ratio of about 3:1 or better is a common sign of a healthy business; below 1:1 you lose money on each new customer. In the example, CLV ≈ 12,200 against a CAC of 2,000 — a ratio of about 6:1.
Raising CLV
- Keep customers longer: good service, follow-ups, loyalty offers.
- Increase order value with bundles and add-ons.
- Increase how often they buy with reminders and subscriptions.
