Area formulas

  • Rectangle: length × width. A 25 ft × 45 ft plot is 1,125 sq ft, which is 5 marla at 225 sq ft per marla.
  • Circle: π × radius². The radius is half the diameter.
  • Triangle: ½ × base × height, or Heron's formula when you only know the three sides.
  • Trapezoid: ½ × (the two parallel sides added) × height. This is useful for plots that are wider at the front than at the back.

Marla and kanal: which size?

One kanal is always 20 marla, but the size of a marla depends on who measures it. Many housing societies (for example DHA Lahore) use 225 sq ft. Government revenue records and many rural areas traditionally use 272.25 sq ft (one marla = 30.25 sq yards). Some areas use 250 sq ft. Before you buy, sell or build, check which size appears in the allotment letter, fard or registry. The difference is about 20%.

Odd-shaped plots

Split the plot into rectangles and triangles, calculate each one, and add them up. For an official measurement, ask a licensed surveyor or patwari. This calculator is for planning and estimates.
