Slope Calculator
Enter two points (x₁, y₁) and (x₂, y₂) to get the slope, the equation of the line and more.
What slope means
Slope (m) is how steep a line is: how much it rises for each step to the right. It is calculated as m = (y₂ − y₁) ÷ (x₂ − x₁), often remembered as "rise over run". A positive slope goes up from left to right, a negative slope goes down, zero is flat, and a vertical line has an undefined slope.
Equation of the line
Once you know m, the y-intercept is b = y₁ − m × x₁, and the line is y = mx + b. For the points (2, 3) and (8, 15), m = 12 ÷ 6 = 2 and b = 3 − 4 = −1, so y = 2x − 1.
Angle and grade
The angle of the line is arctan(m). Grade in percent (m × 100) is used for roads, ramps and drains. A wheelchair ramp is often limited to about 1:12, about 8.3%. The tool also gives the straight-line distance between the points and their midpoint, which are useful in geometry homework and maps.
