About Tip Calculator
Work out the tip on a bill and, if you are sharing, exactly how much each person pays.
How it works
The tip is the bill multiplied by the tip percentage. On a bill of 2,400 with a 10% tip, the tip is 240 and the total is 2,640. Split between four people, each pays 660.
Before or after tax?
In many places the tip is worked out on the amount before sales tax, but plenty of people simply tip on the final total for convenience. The difference is small on an ordinary bill, so choose whichever you prefer and use it consistently.
How much to tip
Customs vary a lot between countries. In the United States 15–20% in restaurants is normal. In the UK around 10–12.5% is common, and many restaurants add a service charge to the bill. In Pakistan 5–10% is usual in sit-down restaurants, and some add a service charge too. Always check the bill first, so you don't tip twice on top of a service charge that is already included.
Splitting fairly
An equal split is the quickest, but if one person ordered much more, it is fairer to split the food by what each person had and share only the tip. Rounding each share up to a convenient amount avoids small change and usually means a slightly bigger tip, which staff rarely mind.
For other everyday sums, the Percentage Calculator and Discount Calculator work on the same principle.
