Rounding methods
- Half up (school rounding): 5 or more rounds up. 2.675 → 2.68 and 2.5 → 3. Negative numbers round away from zero: −2.5 → −3.
- Half to even (banker's rounding): an exact half goes to the nearest even digit (2.5 → 2, 3.5 → 4). It avoids an upward bias when many numbers are added up, so it is used in accounting and many programming languages.
- Ceiling / floor: always up or always down. This suits things like "how many buses are needed" (ceiling) or "how many full boxes" (floor).
- Truncate: cuts digits off without rounding.
Why 2.675 sometimes rounds to 2.67 in software
Computers store decimals in binary, so 2.675 is really 2.67499999… This calculator removes that tiny error first, so you get the answer you expect from school rules. Rounding to the nearest 0.05 or 5 is handy for cash prices and measurements.
