Adding and subtracting
Fractions need the same denominator (bottom number) before you can add them. For 1/3 + 1/4, the smallest common denominator is 12: 1/3 = 4/12 and 1/4 = 3/12, so the answer is 7/12. Subtraction works the same way.
Multiplying
Multiply the tops together and the bottoms together: 2/3 × 3/5 = 6/15, which simplifies to 2/5. You can often cancel common factors first to keep the numbers small.
Dividing
Turn the second fraction upside down and multiply: 3/4 ÷ 1/2 = 3/4 × 2/1 = 6/4 = 3/2, which is 1½ as a mixed number. Dividing by a half is the same as doubling, which is a quick way to check the answer.
Simplifying
