CAGR Calculator
Enter where a value started, where it ended and how many years it took, to get the average yearly growth rate.
What is CAGR?
The compound annual growth rate is the steady yearly rate that would take a value from its start to its end over the period, as if it grew by the same percentage every year. Real growth is rarely smooth, but CAGR makes investments, sales or prices over different periods easy to compare.
Formula
CAGR = (End ÷ Start)^(1 ÷ years) − 1. From 100,000 to 250,000 in 5 years: 2.5^(0.2) − 1 = 20.11% a year. The simple average (150% ÷ 5 = 30%) overstates the growth, because it ignores compounding.
Uses and limits
- Comparing mutual funds, shares, property or business revenue over different periods.
- CAGR hides ups and downs: two investments with the same CAGR can carry very different risk.
- Money added or withdrawn during the period is not included. For regular monthly investing, use the SIP Calculator.
The rule of 72 gives a quick check: at 12% a year, money doubles in about 72 ÷ 12 = 6 years.
