Pipe Volume Calculator
Enter the pipe's inside diameter and its length to see how much water it holds.
Formula
Volume = π × (inside diameter ÷ 2)² × length. A pipe with a 25 mm bore holds about 0.49 litres per metre, so 50 m holds about 24.5 litres.
Inside vs nominal size
Pipes are sold by a nominal size (such as ½", ¾" or 1" PPR or GI pipe) that is not the same as the inside diameter — the wall thickness reduces the bore. For accuracy, use the inside diameter from the manufacturer's table or measure it.
Uses
- Knowing how much water sits in a long run before hot water reaches the tap.
- Dosing chlorine when disinfecting a water line, or antifreeze for a heating loop.
- Estimating how long a pump takes to fill a line, or the weight of a filled pipe on its supports (1 litre of water = 1 kg).
