How long division works
- Take the first digit (or digits) of the dividend.
- Find how many times the divisor fits into it. That digit goes into the quotient.
- Multiply and subtract to find what is left.
- Bring down the next digit and repeat until no digits are left. What remains is the remainder.
The table shows each of these steps. For 7425 ÷ 23, the quotient is 322 and the remainder is 19, so 7425 = 23 × 322 + 19. As a mixed number that is 322 19/23, and as a decimal 322.826…
Checking your answer
Multiply the quotient by the divisor and add the remainder. You should get the dividend back. This calculator works with whole numbers, as long division is taught in primary and middle school. For decimals, multiply both numbers by 10, 100 or another power of ten first.
