Density Calculator
Choose what to find, enter the other two values, and compare the result with common materials.
Density, mass and volume
Density (ρ) = mass ÷ volume. It tells you how much matter is packed into a space. Water is 1,000 kg/m³ (1 g/cm³, or 1 kg per litre). Anything denser sinks in water, and anything lighter floats.
Common densities
- Petrol ≈ 740 kg/m³ and cooking oil ≈ 920 kg/m³, which is why oil floats on water.
- Concrete ≈ 2,400 kg/m³, brickwork ≈ 1,900 kg/m³.
- Aluminium 2,700 kg/m³, steel ≈ 7,850 kg/m³ (a 12 m steel bar weighs more than you might think).
Uses
Density lets you work out weight from size, for example the load of a water tank on a roof (1,000 litres = 1,000 kg) or the weight of steel bars for a slab. Remember that 1 litre = 0.001 m³ and 1 g/cm³ = 1,000 kg/m³. The tool converts between units for you.
