Paint Calculator
Enter the room size, doors, windows and number of coats to estimate how much paint to buy.
How the estimate works
Wall area = 2 × (length + width) × height. A standard door (about 1.9 m²) and window (about 1.5 m²) are subtracted, the ceiling is added if you tick it, and the total is multiplied by the number of coats and divided by the paint's coverage. A 14 × 12 ft room with 10 ft walls needs roughly 9 litres for two coats of emulsion.
Coverage
The coverage per litre is printed on the tin. Typical figures are 8–12 m² per litre per coat for emulsion on smooth plastered walls; rough, porous or freshly plastered walls soak up more, and dark-to-light colour changes need an extra coat. Primer and putty have their own coverage — calculate them separately.
Buying tips
- Buy about 10% extra for touch-ups and keep it labelled.
- Paint is sold in several tin sizes (for example 1 litre, about 3.6 litres and larger drums); combining sizes avoids waste.
- Buy all tins from the same batch so the colour matches.
