Debt Payoff Calculator
List your debts, add any extra you can pay each month, and compare the avalanche and snowball methods.
Avalanche or snowball?
- Avalanche: pay the minimum on every debt and put all extra money on the debt with the highest interest rate. Mathematically it costs the least interest.
- Snowball: put the extra on the smallest balance first. You clear whole debts sooner, which keeps many people motivated.
When a debt is paid off, its minimum payment rolls into the next one, so your monthly total stays the same while debts disappear faster — that is the "snowball" effect both methods use. Switch the method above to compare the debt-free date and interest.
Tips
- Credit cards and buy-now-pay-later plans usually have the highest rates — tackle them first.
- Even a small extra amount each month shortens the plan a lot.
- Talk to the bank before missing a payment; late fees and penalty rates make debt grow quickly.
The plan assumes rates and minimum payments stay the same and no new debt is added.
