Video Converter
Choose a video and the format you need. MP4 plays almost everywhere, WebM is best for websites, MOV suits Apple editing apps, and AVI suits older players.
Which format should I choose?
- MP4 (H.264 + AAC): the safe choice. It plays on Android, iPhone, Windows, Mac, smart TVs, WhatsApp, YouTube and Facebook.
- WebM (VP9 + Opus): the open web format. Files are often smaller than MP4 at the same quality, which makes it good for your own website. Some older iPhones and editing apps can't open it.
- MOV: Apple's container, with the same H.264 video inside. Use it when an Apple app asks for MOV.
- MKV: popular with media players such as VLC and Kodi.
- AVI: for older DVD players, car screens and TVs that don't play MP4.
Resolution and size
Lowering the resolution is the quickest way to make a video smaller. 720p looks good on phones and laptops and is often less than half the size of 1080p. The converter only ever makes videos smaller, never larger, and always keeps the original shape (aspect ratio). To control the file size more precisely, use the Video Compressor.
Good to know
- The first video track and the first audio track are kept. Subtitles and extra audio languages are not copied.
- Converting re-encodes the video. That takes time (roughly the length of the video for large files) and means a small, usually invisible, loss of quality. To only cut a video without re-encoding, use Trim Video.
- To keep only the sound, use the Audio Converter. To check what format a video is in now, use Media Info.
- Your video is processed on our server with FFmpeg and deleted after you download the result, or automatically after about an hour.
How it works
- Upload — select or drag & drop your file.
- Process — choose any options and start; most files take a few seconds, large files, OCR and video can take a minute or two.
- Download — save the result; it is deleted from the server once downloaded (or after about an hour).
