Why check media info?
- Before converting: see if a video is already H.264/AAC (plays almost everywhere) or uses HEVC/H.265, VP9 or AV1, which some phones, TVs and editors can't open.
- Before uploading: check the resolution, frame rate and bitrate that YouTube, Facebook, a course platform or a client asks for.
- When a file won't play: find out which codec or container is the problem, then fix it with MOV to MP4, MKV to MP4 or the Video Compressor.
- Audio: check the sample rate (44,100 Hz or 48,000 Hz), whether it is mono or stereo, and the bitrate, before sending a file for a podcast or radio.
What the values mean
| Container | The file format (MP4, Matroska/MKV, QuickTime/MOV …). It holds one or more streams. |
|---|---|
| Codec | How the video or audio is compressed (H.264, HEVC, VP9, AAC, MP3, Opus …). |
| Bitrate | Data per second. Higher usually means better quality and a bigger file. |
| Frame rate | Pictures per second. 24/25/30 are normal, and 50/60 are used for smooth motion and games. |
| Rotation | Phone videos are often stored sideways with a rotation flag. Some players ignore the flag, which is why a video can look sideways. |
Privacy
The file is uploaded over HTTPS and read by FFprobe (part of FFmpeg) on our server. Nothing is converted or kept: the file is deleted as soon as its details have been read. If the video contains a recording location, the tool tells you, but it does not show the location.
