About Audio Compressor

Reduce the size of an audio file — a voice recording, a lecture, a podcast or a song — so it is easier to send, upload or store.

How audio size works
Audio size depends on the bitrate and the length. A WAV recording uses about 10 MB per minute; the same audio as an MP3 at 128 kbps uses about 1 MB per minute, and at 64 kbps about half of that.

Choosing the right setting
For speech, voice notes and lectures, 64–96 kbps usually sounds perfectly clear, and switching to mono halves the size again with no real loss, because one voice doesn't need two channels. For music, stay at 128 kbps or above; below that, cymbals and high notes start to sound watery.

Things to avoid
Compressing a file that is already a low-bitrate MP3 won't make it much smaller and will make it sound worse. Start from the best version you have, and keep an untouched original if you may need to edit the recording later.

Privacy
Files are processed on our server only to produce the smaller version and are deleted automatically afterwards.

Common uses
Students compressing recorded lectures, sending voice recordings by email, uploading audio to a learning platform with a size limit, and saving space on a phone.

To cut a recording down to the part you need first, use the Audio Trimmer / MP3 Cutter. To extract sound from a video, use MP4 to MP3.
