About MP4 to MP3
Extract the audio track from an MP4 video and save it as an MP3 — for a lecture you want to listen to on the go, a podcast recorded on video, a voice note or a song from your own recordings.
How it works
The video picture is dropped and only the sound is kept, then encoded as MP3. The file is processed on our server only to produce your result and is deleted automatically afterwards.
Choosing a quality
MP3 quality is set by its bitrate. 128 kbps is fine for speech and uses about 1 MB per minute. 192–256 kbps suits most music, and 320 kbps — about 2.4 MB per minute — is the highest MP3 offers. A higher setting can't add quality that wasn't in the original video, though: if the video's sound was poor or heavily compressed, the MP3 will sound the same.
Common problems
If the MP3 is silent, the video may have no audio track at all, or one in an unusual format — try converting the video to a standard MP4 first. If the file is very long, check that it is within the upload size limit shown on the tool.
Good to know
Extract audio only from videos you made yourself or have the right to use; music and films from other people are usually protected by copyright.
Need an uncompressed file for editing or transcription software? Use MP4 to WAV. To trim the result into a ringtone or a short clip, use the Audio Trimmer / MP3 Cutter.
