SRT or VTT: which one do you need?

SRT is the classic subtitle format used by desktop players such as VLC, by video editors and by most subtitle download sites. WebVTT (.vtt) is the format web browsers understand. HTML5 video uses it through the <track> element, and many web players and course platforms ask for it.

What changes during conversion

  • Timestamps change from 00:01:02,500 (SRT, comma) to 00:01:02.500 (VTT, dot), and back. Timings stay exactly the same, to the millisecond.
  • <b>, <i> and <u> formatting is kept. SRT <font color> tags and position codes like {\an8} are removed, because WebVTT does not support them. You are told how many were removed.
  • VTT speaker tags such as <v Ali> become “Ali: ” in SRT. Cue position settings (line:, align:) have no SRT equivalent and are dropped.
  • SRT cue numbers are rewritten as 1, 2, 3 … in order. Characters such as & and < are escaped as WebVTT requires.

Checks before you upload

The converter warns about cues that end before they start, overlap the next cue, have no text, have a broken timing line, or contain an empty line, which ends a cue early in most players. Fix these in the input box and the output updates straight away.

Encoding and privacy

Files are read as UTF-8. Older Windows subtitle files (ANSI/Windows-1252) are detected and converted, and the output is always UTF-8, which Urdu and Arabic subtitles need. The file never leaves your browser.
