How to resize an image

1. Choose a photo. It opens in your browser and is not uploaded.
2. Type the new width or height in pixels (the other side follows automatically while the link button between them is on), choose a percentage, or pick a social media size.
3. Choose the file type and press Resize & download.

Keeping photos sharp

Large reductions (for example a 4000-pixel phone photo down to 500 pixels) are done in several halving steps rather than in one jump. This keeps edges and text crisp instead of jagged. Making an image bigger than the original cannot add real detail, so it will look softer. The tool warns you when you do this.

Social media sizes

Fill covers the whole size and trims what doesn't fit, which suits profile photos and thumbnails. Show the whole photo keeps everything and fills the empty space with the background colour you pick, which suits product photos and documents. File size and format

• JPG is best for photos. A quality of 80–90 gives a small file with no visible loss.
• PNG keeps transparency and sharp text, but photo files are larger.
• WebP gives the smallest files and works on all modern browsers and phones.

To shrink a file to a certain size in KB without changing its pixel size, use Image Compress. Resizing also removes hidden photo data such as GPS location, because only the pixels are saved.
