You get an attachment from your bank, a university, or a client — and it refuses to open. Sometimes the error is vague ("There was an error opening this document"), sometimes the viewer simply shows a blank screen. Most cases fall into a handful of causes, and you can work through them in order.
Quick Checklist
Try these first; they solve the majority of cases:
- Download it again. Interrupted downloads are the most common cause.
- Check the file size. A PDF of a few KB that should be several pages is probably incomplete.
- Try another viewer. Open it in your web browser, which has a built-in PDF viewer.
- Check the file extension. Make sure it really ends in
.pdf, not.pdf.zipor.html. - Look for a password prompt. Some files ask for a password and look like an error if you close the dialog.

How to Repair a Damaged PDF
- Open Repair PDF.
- Upload the file that won't open.
- Let the tool rebuild the file structure.
- Download the repaired copy and open it.
Repair works by reconstructing the internal index of the PDF — the part that tells a reader where each page and image lives. If that index is broken but the page data is intact, repair can bring the whole file back. If page data itself is missing, some pages may stay blank. Problems With Email and WhatsApp Attachments
- Email: some email services block or strip attachments they consider risky. Ask the sender to share a download link instead.
- WhatsApp: files sent as "photos" rather than "documents" can be converted and damaged. Ask for the file to be sent through the document option.
- Phone storage full: a download can silently stop when storage runs out, leaving a broken file. Free some space and download again.
When the File Came From a Scanner or Phone App

Preventing It Next Time
- Keep a backup of important PDFs in a second location.
- Safely eject USB drives before removing them.
- Avoid renaming a file's extension manually.
- Ask senders for PDF/A when documents are meant for long-term records — PDF/A is designed to stay readable for years.
