Your answer to question 1 is typed in Word, question 2 is a hand-drawn diagram in your notebook, question 3 includes a screenshot of your code — and the learning portal accepts exactly one PDF file, up to a few MB. This is one of the most common situations students face, and it only takes a few steps to handle cleanly.
Step 1: Get Every Part Into PDF Form
Different parts of an assignment need different treatment:
| Part | How to turn it into PDF |
|---|---|
| Word document | Word to PDF |
| Handwritten pages | Photograph each page, then JPG to PDF |
| Screenshots | JPG to PDF (works for PNG screenshots saved as images too) |
| PowerPoint slides | PPT to PDF |
| Excel calculations | Excel to PDF |
Photographing handwritten work
- Use daylight or a bright lamp and avoid your own shadow over the page.
- Hold the phone directly above the page, not at an angle.
- Place the page on a dark desk so the edges are clear.
- Write with a dark pen — pencil often looks faint in photos.
Step 2: Add a Cover Page
Most teachers want your name, roll number, course code and assignment title up front. Type a simple cover page in Word, convert it to PDF, and put it first. It also makes your submission easy to identify if it is ever printed out with others.
Step 3: Merge in the Right Order
Open Merge PDF, upload all the parts, and arrange them: cover page, then questions in order. If you notice a page out of place afterwards, fix it with Organize PDF rather than starting again. For more on ordering, see how to merge PDFs in a specific order.
Step 4: Fix Rotation and Remove Extras
Phone photos often end up sideways. Correct them with Rotate PDF, and delete any accidental blank or duplicate pages with Remove Pages.
Step 5: Check the Size
Photos of handwritten pages can make a PDF surprisingly large — ten photos may add up to 20–40 MB. If your portal has a limit, use Compress PDF. Handwriting stays readable at quite strong compression, but zoom in on diagrams and small writing to make sure. If you need the file under a specific size, how to get a PDF under 1 MB walks through it.
Step 6: Add Page Numbers (Optional but Useful)
For longer submissions, Add Page Numbers helps your teacher refer to specific pages in feedback — "see page 4" is much clearer than "the diagram near the middle".
Before You Press Submit
- Open the final PDF and scroll through every page.
- Check the file name — something like
CS101_Assignment2_Ali_Raza_2026-123.pdfis clear. - Confirm it is the final version, not an earlier draft.
- Submit a little before the deadline; portals often slow down at the last minute.
Academic Honesty Note
Tools like these help you present your own work neatly. They are not a way around your institution's rules on originality or collaboration — always follow your course's academic integrity policy.
