How to split a PDF into separate files
Splitting is the reverse of merging — useful when one PDF contains multiple documents that need to be separate, like a scanned batch of invoices or a book split into chapters.
Ways to split
- Every page separately — one PDF per page, useful for scanned batches.
- By page range — specify exact ranges like 1-5, 6-10.
- Every N pages — split into equal chunks.
How to do it
- Open Split PDF.
- Upload the file.
- Choose your split method.
- Download the result — usually as a ZIP containing the separate files.
If you only need a few pages
For pulling out just one or two specific pages rather than splitting the whole document, Extract Pages is faster and gives you exactly what you need in one file.
Typical use cases
Splitting comes up when a single scanned batch actually contains several unrelated documents — a scanner run that captured five different invoices in one file, or a legal bundle that needs to be filed as separate exhibits.
Before you split
If the source pages are rotated or in the wrong order, fix that first with Rotate PDF or Organize PDF — it is much easier to correct the whole file once than to fix several smaller files afterward. Once split, each resulting file can be compressed individually with Compress PDF if needed.
Naming the output files clearly
When splitting into many pieces, rename each resulting file with something meaningful — the date range, invoice number, or chapter name — rather than leaving generic names like "part1.pdf", which become hard to tell apart once downloaded alongside dozens of similar files.

If you find yourself splitting the same type of document regularly — monthly statements into individual months, for instance — using consistent page ranges each time makes the process quicker to repeat without re-checking where each section starts.
