How to add page numbers to a PDF
Reports, theses and long documents are much easier to navigate and reference with page numbers, especially once printed and someone needs to say "see page 12."
How to add them
- Open Add Page Numbers.
- Upload your PDF.
- Choose the position — bottom centre is the most common.
- Set a starting number if the first page shouldn't be "1" (common when a cover page exists).
- Download.
Starting numbers for a thesis
Universities often require the cover page and table of contents to be unnumbered or numbered separately in roman numerals, with the main content starting at page 1. Check your institution's formatting guide before submitting — the exact convention varies.
If pages are already numbered in the design
Adding numbers to a document that already has printed numbers on the page creates duplicates. Check a few pages first.
Formatting choices that matter
Beyond position, consider the number format itself — plain numbers, "Page X of Y", or roman numerals for front matter. Academic and legal documents often specify an exact format in their style guide, so check before assuming plain numbering is acceptable.
Combining with other finishing touches
Page numbers are usually one of the last steps before a document is finalised. If you also need a watermark or header text, apply that first with Watermark PDF, then add page numbers as the final pass so neither element overlaps the other.
Checking the result before printing
Before sending a numbered document to print, especially for a bound document like a thesis, print a single test page first and confirm the number sits within the printable margin — some printers crop slightly differently near the edge than what a screen preview shows.
