How to Set Up a Google Business Profile

A Google Business Profile puts your business on Google Maps and in the local "map pack" that appears for local searches. For most businesses serving a local area, it's the single most impactful free thing they can do for local visibility.

Step 1: Find or Create Your Listing

  1. Go to business.google.com and sign in with a Google account.
  2. Search for your business name. If it appears, click to claim it. If not, click "Add your business to Google".
  3. Select the correct business category (you can add more later).

Step 2: Enter Your Business Details

Fill in every field accurately:

  • Business name: exactly as your business operates.
  • Category: be specific — "Pakistani Restaurant" rather than just "Restaurant" if applicable.
  • Address: your full street address with area, city and postal code.
  • Phone number: the number customers should call.
  • Website URL: your domain.
  • Hours: accurate operating hours, including special hours for holidays.

Step 3: Verify the Listing

Google must verify that the business is real and at the stated location. Methods available vary:

  • Postcard: a verification PIN is mailed to the business address. Enter the PIN in your dashboard when it arrives.
  • Phone: an automated call with a PIN (not always available).
  • Email: a PIN sent to the email on file (not always available).
  • Video call: a Google representative walks through the business via video.

Until verification is complete, the profile has limited visibility.

Step 4: Complete the Profile After Verification

Once verified, fully complete the profile:

  • Add photos (exterior, interior, team, products/work samples) — profiles with photos get significantly more engagement.
  • Write a business description (750 characters) using natural language about what you offer.
  • List all services or products.
  • Add attributes that apply (Wi-Fi, parking, women-owned, etc.).

Ongoing Management

An active profile performs better. After setup:

  • Respond to every review — even a brief "thank you" on positive reviews signals engagement.
  • Post updates occasionally — offers, announcements, new services.
  • Update hours for holidays and special events.
  • Check Q&A — customers can ask questions publicly; answer them promptly.

Products and Services Section

Add every product or service you offer with a name, description and where relevant a price or price range. This content appears in the profile directly and helps Google understand what your business offers for query matching. For service-area businesses that don't show an address, the services section is especially important because there's less geographic specificity to work with. Update this section whenever services change — an outdated services list sends mixed signals.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Google Business Profile free?

Yes, completely free. Creating, verifying and managing a Google Business Profile costs nothing.

How long does verification take?

The most common method (postcard) takes 5–14 days for delivery. Phone and email verification (where available) are instant. Video verification is available for some businesses.

Can I create a profile without a physical address?

Yes — service-area businesses (plumbers, freelancers, delivery services) can create a profile that shows their service area without a public address.

What happens if someone else has already claimed my business?

Google has a process to request ownership. If the current manager doesn't respond within 7 days, you can request transfer of the listing.
