Why this guide exists
We noticed many students searching for “how to add and simplify fractions” end up on long, confusing pages or paid apps. So we created this simple, free guide + calculator that works on any phone or computer, without signup. You can learn the concept, practice with examples, and then check your answers instantly.

What Is a Fraction?

A fraction represents a part of a whole. It has two parts:

  • Numerator (top number): how many parts you have
  • Denominator (bottom number): how many equal parts the whole is divided into

For example, in the fraction 3443, 3 is the numerator, and 4 is the denominator.

Steps to Add and Simplify Fractions

There are two main cases:

  1. Like denominators (same bottom numbers)
  2. Unlike denominators (different bottom numbers)

In both cases, the final step is to simplify the result if possible.

Case 1: Adding Fractions with Like Denominators

When the denominators are the same, adding fractions is straightforward.

Steps

  1. Check that the denominators are the same.
  2. Add the numerators.
  3. Keep the denominator unchanged.
  4. Simplify the result if possible.

Example 1

27 + 37 = 2 + 37 = 5772 + 73 = 72 + 3 = 75

The denominators are the same (7), so we add the numerators: 2+3=5; 2+3=5. The answer 5775 is already in simplest form.

Example 2

49 + 29 = 4 + 29 = 6994 + 92 = 94 + 2 = 96

Now simplify 6996:

  • GCD of 6 and 9 is 3
  • 6 ÷ 39 ÷ 3 = 239 ÷ 36 ÷ 3 = 32

So, 49 + 29 = 2394 + 92 = 32.

Case 2: Adding Fractions with Unlike Denominators

When denominators are different, you must first make them the same using the least common denominator (LCD), which is the least common multiple (LCM) of the denominators.

Steps

  1. Find the LCM of the denominators.
  2. Convert each fraction to an equivalent fraction with that denominator.
  3. Add the numerators.
  4. Keep the common denominator.
  5. Simplify the result if possible.

Example: Add 13 + 1431 + 41

Step 1: Find the LCM of 3 and 4

Multiples of 3: 3, 6, 9, 12, 15…

Multiples of 4: 4, 8, 12, 16…

LCM = 12, so the common denominator is 12.

Step 2: Convert to equivalent fractions

13 = 1 × 43 × 4 = 41231 = 3 × 41 × 4 = 124

14 = 1 × 34 × 3 = 31241 = 4 × 31 × 3= 123

Step 3–4: Add numerators, keep denominator

412 + 312 = 4 + 312 = 712124 + 123 = 124 + 3 = 127

Step 5: Simplify

7 and 12 have no common factor other than 1, so 712127 is already simplified.

How to Simplify Fractions

Simplifying a fraction means writing it in its lowest terms by dividing the numerator and denominator by their greatest common divisor (GCD).

Steps

  1. Find the GCD of the numerator and denominator.
  2. Divide both numerator and denominator by the GCD.
  3. Write the new fraction.

Example 1

Simplify 6886:

  • GCD of 6 and 8 is 2
  • 6 ÷ 28 ÷ 2 = 348 ÷ 26 ÷ 2 = 43

So, 68 = 3486 = 43.

Example 2

Simplify 15252515:

  • GCD of 15 and 25 is 5
  • 15 ÷ 525 ÷ 5 = 3525 ÷ 515 ÷ 5 = 53

So, 1525 = 352515 = 53.

Worked Examples: Add and Simplify

Example A (Like Denominators)

310 + 110 = 3 + 110 = 410103 + 101 = 103 + 1 = 104

Simplify 410104:

  • GCD of 4 and 10 is 2
  • 4 ÷ 210 ÷ 2 = 2510 ÷ 24 ÷ 2 = 52

Answer: 310 + 110 = 25103 + 101 = 52.

Example B (Unlike Denominators)

25 + 1252 + 21

Step 1: LCM of 5 and 2

Multiples of 5: 5, 10, 15…

Multiples of 2: 2, 4, 6, 8, 10…

LCM = 10.

Step 2: Convert

25=2×25×2=41052=5×22×2=104

12=1×52×5=51021=2×51×5=105

Step 3–4: Add

410+510=910104+105=109

9 and 10 have no common factor other than 1, so 910109 is already simplified.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there a tool to check my fraction calculations?

Yes. You can use the MentorMakers Fraction Calculator to add, subtract, multiply, and divide fractions online for free. It shows simplified results and works in any modern browser.

How do I add a fraction and a whole number?

Convert the whole number to a fraction, find a common denominator, then add as usual.

Can I use this method for mixed numbers?

Yes. First convert mixed numbers to improper fractions, then follow the same steps: find a common denominator, add, and simplify. You can convert the final answer back to a mixed number if needed.

Do I always need to simplify my answer?

In most school and exam settings, yes. Teachers usually expect fractions in lowest terms. Simplifying also makes your answer clearer and easier to use in further calculations.

What do I do if the denominators are different?

If the denominators are different, find the least common denominator (LCD), which is the LCM of the denominators. Convert each fraction to an equivalent fraction with that denominator, then add the numerators and simplify.
