Few things are more awkward than turning your head to read a page — or asking an examiner to. Sideways pages usually come from phone photos, scanners that misread orientation, or landscape tables placed inside portrait reports.
Why Pages End Up Sideways
- Phone photos: the camera saves orientation data that some converters ignore.
- Scanners: automatic orientation detection can guess wrongly, especially on pages with little text.
- Mixed documents: landscape spreadsheets or diagrams inside portrait reports.
- Upside-down originals: a sheet fed into the scanner the wrong way round.
How to Rotate Pages
- Open Rotate PDF.
- Upload the file.
- Choose the direction: 90° clockwise, 90° anticlockwise or 180° for upside-down pages.
- Apply the rotation to the affected pages.
- Download and check every page.
If only a couple of pages are wrong, rotate just those — the rest of the document stays as it is.
Prevent It at the Source
- When photographing documents, hold the phone parallel to the page and wait for the camera to settle on the right orientation.
- In scanning apps, check each page preview before saving.
- When converting photos, use JPG to PDF after confirming the photos display upright in your gallery.
Landscape Pages Inside Portrait Reports
A wide table or chart often looks best in landscape. The rule is simple: the text must read left to right when the reader turns the page the natural way (clockwise). Rotate so that the top of the table faces the left edge of the portrait page, which matches the convention used in most printed reports.
Check After Merging

Some phone apps rotate pages automatically based on the device's orientation, which can hide the problem on your screen while the reviewer sees a sideways page on their computer. Always check the finished file on a laptop or desktop browser before submitting it.
Fixing Rotation in a Merged File
If you have already merged documents and several pages scattered through the file are sideways, rotate them all in one pass by selecting each affected page. There is no need to split the document, fix each part and merge again.
Why It Is Worth Fixing
