Why is my image blurry after uploading to a website?

Category: Image Tools Updated: 26 Sep 2026 0 reads
Quick answerThe platform likely compressed or resized it on upload. Starting from a larger, well-compressed original reduces the effect.

This is one of the most common and confusing image problems — the photo looks fine on your phone, then comes out soft or blocky after uploading to a website or app.

Check the original first

Open the file itself at full size, away from the platform. If it looks sharp there, the blur is being introduced during or after upload, not in the photo itself.

Why platforms cause this

Many websites and apps automatically resize and compress images to save storage and load faster. This is normal, but heavy compression on top of an already-large file can look worse than expected.

What helps

  • Resize the image to a sensible size yourself with the Image Editor before uploading, rather than letting the platform resize an oversized original unpredictably.
  • Compress moderately with Image Compress first — a well-compressed image often survives a platform's own compression better than an uncompressed one.

A test to isolate the cause

Upload the same image to a different platform or a test page and compare. If it looks sharp there but blurry on the original platform, the specific platform's processing is the cause, not your file — useful to know before spending time re-editing an image that was never the problem.

Preparing images to survive platform compression better

A moderately compressed image from Image Compress, at a sensible resolution for its display size, generally survives a platform's own re-compression with less additional quality loss than an unoptimised, oversized original.

When the blur only appears at certain zoom levels

If an image looks sharp at its normal display size but blurry when a visitor zooms in, that is a resolution limit rather than a compression problem — the image simply does not contain enough pixel detail to look sharp enlarged, and needs a higher-resolution original to fix properly.

Frequently asked questions

How can I tell if the blur is from my file or the platform?
Open the original at full size on your own device — if it looks sharp there, the platform is likely compressing it further on upload.
Does resizing before uploading help?
Yes — matching your upload to the platform's actual display size, rather than uploading an oversized original, usually helps.
