You finish merging a report and realise the appendix landed before chapter three. Or a scanner produced pages in the order 1, 3, 5, 2, 4, 6. Rebuilding the whole document is unnecessary — you can simply move the pages.
When You Need to Reorder Pages
- A merged file came out in the wrong sequence.
- Double-sided scanning separated fronts and backs.
- A reviewer asked for documents in a different order than you submitted.
- You want to move a summary or cover letter to the front.
How to Reorder Pages
- Open Organize PDF.
- Upload your file and wait for the page thumbnails to appear.
- Move pages into the order you want.
- Review the full sequence from first to last.
- Download the reorganised PDF.
Thumbnails make it easy to spot sideways pages at the same time; fix those with Rotate PDF.
Fixing Interleaved Scans
When a scanner scans all the fronts and then all the backs of a stack, a 3-sheet document comes out as front1, front2, front3, back1, back2, back3. The correct order is front1, back1, front2, back2, front3, back3.
For a few sheets, dragging pages is quickest. For a long stack, a faster method is:
- Use Split PDF to separate the fronts into one file and the backs into another.
- Merge them alternately with Merge PDF, one sheet at a time, or reorder the combined file.
Plan Big Changes on Paper
If you are reorganising a long report, write the new order first — for example: 1–2 (cover and contents), 15–20 (summary), 3–14 (main body), 21–24 (appendix). Working from a written plan avoids losing track halfway through.
Reorder, Then Number
If the document shows page numbers, reorder first and number last. Printed numbers are part of each page and do not update themselves. Use Add Page Numbers once the order is final. Our guide to numbering pages in a thesis or report explains how to handle cover pages and front matter.
Common Problems
| Problem | Cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Page numbers look wrong after reordering | Numbers are printed on the page | Remove and re-add numbers after reordering |
| Table of contents points to wrong pages | Content moved | Update the contents in the source document or check links |
| Duplicate page appears | Page added twice when merging | Remove it with Remove Pages |
