Record a video on an iPhone and it saves as a MOV file. Perfectly fine on an iPhone, iPad or Mac — but send it to anyone else and there's a real chance their device or app can't play it. MOV is Apple's native video format, and outside the Apple world, support is patchy. Converting to MP4 makes the video play everywhere.
How to Convert
- Open MOV to MP4.
- Upload the MOV file.
- Convert it.
- Download the MP4.
The MP4 will play on Android phones, Windows computers, smart TVs, and upload cleanly to YouTube, Instagram, WhatsApp and practically every platform.
Why MOV and MP4 Exist Separately
MOV was developed by Apple for QuickTime. It supports very high quality video and is used by iPhone and by professional editing software on Mac. But the format is tightly tied to Apple's ecosystem.
MP4 became the open, universal standard for digital video over the last couple of decades — supported everywhere because it was designed to be. The same H.264 video can live inside either container, but the container (MP4) determines whether most non-Apple software can open it at all.
When You Actually Need to Convert
- Sending a video to an Android phone user via email or any method other than AirDrop.
- Uploading to a platform that shows an error for MOV (many do, despite technically supporting it under some conditions).
- Sharing in a WhatsApp or Telegram group where members use different devices.
- Sending to someone using Windows for editing or playback.
- Uploading to any web form or portal that specifies MP4.
When You Don't Need to
- If the recipient also uses iPhone, iPad or Mac — MOV plays fine in Apple's own software.
- If you're editing on Final Cut Pro or another Mac editing tool — MOV is native and there's no advantage in converting before editing.
- Sharing via AirDrop to another Apple device.
After Converting: Check the Result
Play the MP4 and scrub through it, including any parts with fast motion, to confirm quality is acceptable. The file will typically be somewhat smaller than the MOV original, which is normal — MP4 compression is more efficient than MOV in many cases, even at similar visual quality.
