QUETTA:

Authorities in Balochistan have completed an internal inquiry into the dramatic escape of 25 prisoners from Mastung Central Jail on January 31 amid a wave of coordinated terrorist attacks across the province.

The investigation has found lapses in security protocols, prompting jail department officials to issue show-cause notices to three senior officers at the facility.

The incident occurred when armed terrorists, reportedly linked to banned groups including the Baloch Liberation Army, launched simultaneous assaults on multiple targets in Balochistan, including the Central Jail in Mastung. Attackers reportedly overpowered staff, took hostages, broke locks, and facilitated the breakout of inmates.

Many facing charges related to terrorism, murder, and narcotics. Contemporary reports indicate around 27 prisoners escaped from Mastung Jail during the chaos, with some sources confirming injuries to jail staff and partial damage to the facility.

Of the fugitives, only five have been returned to custody so far, leaving approximately 20 still at large despite ongoing security operations. The jail department’s inquiry report highlighted negligence in safeguarding the perimeter and response measures during the assault.

Officials stated the show-cause notices require the officers to explain their actions or face disciplinary proceedings, including potential suspension or transfer.
