WASHINGTON: Paul Kapur, President Trump’s nominee for the Assistant Secretary of State for South and Central Asia, has told the Senate Committee in his confirmation hearings, that he would pursue security cooperation with Pakistan while exploring opportunities for bilateral trade and investment collaboration. The Indian American Paul Kapur said South Asia has recently narrowly escaped a serious conflict, where the Vice President and Secretary Rubio intensely engaged on the issue. “If confirmed, I will continue to promote longstanding U.S.security interests with India and Pakistan through the pursuit of peace and stability, and the fight against terrorism.”

Paul Kapur, a scholar of Indian origin, has been a strong proponent for deepening the strategic ties between India and the US. His research scholarship, which includes books like ‘Dangerous Deterrent’ as well as articles like ‘India and Pakistan’s Unstable Peace’ also echoes his prevalent bias regarding Pakistan. In numerous instances, he has insinuated that Pakistan is an instigator of instability. “If confirmed, I’ll support efforts to bring home detained Americans in Afghanistan and work to prevent the country from becoming a terrorism launchpad again.”
