ISLAMABAD:
The Advocate General of Islamabad, Ayaz Shaukat, on Wednesday resigned from his post after being appointed Chairman of the Social Media Authority.
Shaukat submitted his resignation to the President, stating that he had endeavoured to discharge his responsibilities as Advocate General with integrity. He noted that, in light of his new appointment, it was appropriate for his resignation to be accepted.
Meanwhile, the Islamabad Bar Association (IBA) has called upon the government to appoint the next Advocate General from within its own ranks. A similar demand had earlier been made by the Islamabad High Court Bar Association (IHCBA).
In an official statement, the IBA asserted that it would make no compromise on the issue and would take all necessary steps to safeguard the interests of its members. It emphasised that the office of Advocate General Islamabad is a key constitutional position, representing the legal fraternity of the federal capital. The association further maintained that lawyers belonging to the Islamabad Bar have a prior claim to the post, urging the government to ensure that the appointment is made from among its members. The statement was issued by Bar President Naeem Ali Gujar and General Secretary Raja Khawar Dhanyal.
