KARACHI:

The government is set to introduce a Child Protection Policy aimed at preventing violations of children’s rights through coordinated efforts among various provincial departments. The policy is expected to be approved in the upcoming cabinet meeting scheduled for July 8. It will address critical issues such as child trafficking, child marriage, child labour, children affected by armed conflict, child separation, alternative care, and other aspects of children’s well-being and safety. The Sindh Child Protection Authority (SCPA) will lead the implementation of the policy, working in collaboration with relevant departments. A Child Protection Technical Working Group will be established to ensure inter-departmental coordination and smooth execution.

According to the draft policy obtained by The Express Tribune, the social welfare department will register and monitor orphanages and refer cases to NADRA, which will in turn register the children living in them.

The College Education, Universities, and Boards Departments will incorporate child rights and protection topics into their curricula. The FIA will work alongside the police, SCPA, and the social welfare dept to support children recovered from criminal gangs.
