ISLAMABAD: In a bid to keep their dreams alive in the Pakistan Super League X, Lahore Qalandars are revamping their firepower for a high-stakes showdown against Peshawar Zalmi on Sunday at the Pindi Stadium.
It is a match that could either resurrect or ruin Qalandars campaign. With just one match left in the pool stage, Qalandars stand at a precarious nine points from nine games. A defeat could be the last nail in the coffin, while a victory would give them a lifeline to break into the top four. For Zalmi, who sit on eight points, a win — especially against Lahore — could seal their playoff berth. Before that, they face Karachi Kings on Saturday, giving them a chance to bolster their standing even further.
In a significant move, Qalandars have summoned two explosive reinforcements. Bangladeshi legend and world-class all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan is set to replace the injured Daryl Mitchell, while Sri Lankan power-hitter Bhanuka Rajapaksa comes in for the sidelined Tom Curran.
Mitchell, who sustained a hand injury during the rain-hit clash against Karachi Kings on May 4, has been ruled out. In his place, Shakib brings a treasure trove of experience — 7,438 T20 runs and 492 wickets, including a jaw-dropping 6 for 6 career-best spell. He’s slated to join the squad in Islamabad on May 17.
“We’re at a crucial stage where every game counts,” Shakib said. “I’m thrilled to be part of Qalandars. This team has passionate fans and a great spirit. I’m here to contribute and help push us over the line.”
Equally vital is the addition of Rajapaksa, whose fearless hitting and strike rate of 142.45 over the past two years could turn the tide in the middle-order. “It’s an honour to represent Qalandars at such a pivotal time,” Rajapaksa stated.
“The PSL is a world-class tournament. I’m ready to bring my best and fight for the badge.” Qalandars’ Team Director Sameen Rana welcomed the new recruits with high praise.

Adding further strength to the squad, Zimbabwean all-rounder Sikandar Raza has also joined the team, deepening Lahore’s arsenal as they brace for their toughest test yet. Qalandars’ fate hangs by a thread — but with Shakib, Rajapaksa, and Raza in the ranks, they’re not going down without a fight.
