HYDERABAD:
In protest against the killing of Dr Mehwish Hasnain in Kohat near the premises of her hospital on Monday, Doctors Joint Action Committee observed a black day in Liaquat University Hospital in Hyderabad on Wednesday.
Condemning the killing, the protesters demanded deployment of Rangers and setting up of police pickets in the major hospitals which often witness aggression and violence from attendants of patients brought to the health facilities in critical conditions.
Dr Niaz Babar, Dr Sajjan Halepoto, Prof Zameer Tunio of Pakistan Medical Association, Dr Roshan Chandio of Young Doctors Association, and others who spoke warned of spreading protest to the entire province if security measures are not taken without delay.
Dr Mehwish Hasnain, on the fateful day had an altercation with a man she had asked to wait outside the women’s examination area to protect patients’ privacy at the District Headquarters (DHQ) Hospital.
After completing her duty, she was returning home in a rickshaw when unidentified assailants on a motorbike blocked her way near the hospital and opened indiscriminate fire killing her on the spot.
