Polish CEO Piotr Szczerek has issued a public apology after footage showed him taking a signed cap from a young fan during the US Open.
Szczerek, who heads paving stone company Drogbruk, explained that he misunderstood the moment when tennis player Kamil Majchrzak offered his cap following victory over Karen Khachanov. He believed the hat was intended for his own children, who had been requesting autographs earlier.
“I would like to unequivocally apologise to the boy who was harmed, his family, as well as all the fans and the player himself,” Szczerek wrote on Instagram. “I made a serious mistake.” He admitted the situation was a “necessary lesson in humility” and confirmed he had apologised directly to the family.
Majchrzak later clarified that the moment was the result of “some kind of confusion” amid post-match celebrations, adding that exhaustion and excitement contributed to the misunderstanding. The Polish tennis star has since met with the boy, presenting him with a new signed hat and additional gifts.
