LAHORE: Pakistan men’s hockey team captain Imad Shakeel Butt has urged the Asian Hockey Federation (AHF) to reconsider India as the host nation for the 2025 Men’s Hockey Asia Cup, citing rising political tensions between the two nations that could jeopardise Pakistan’s participation.
Speaking to media, Butt emphasised the importance of the Asia Cup, as it serves as a World Cup qualifying event. “Given the current political situation between Pakistan and India, we believe the venue should be reconsidered,” Butt stated.
The tournament, scheduled to take place in Rajgir, India, from August 27 to September 7, 2025, now faces uncertainty regarding Pakistan’s attendance. Reports indicate that visa denials for Pakistani players—allegedly linked to the Pahalgam incident—could prevent the team from competing.
Neither the Indian government nor the AHF has issued an official statement on the matter, further fueling concerns over Pakistan’s ability to participate. Meanwhile, the Pakistan hockey team has shifted its focus to preparations for the FIH Nations Cup, where a strong performance could secure promotion to the Pro League.
