KARACHI:
Part of the roof of the mezzanine floor of a residential building collapsed in the Saddar area on Sunday, injuring one person and damaging several parked vehicles.
Residents of the building rushed to shut its doors, in fear of the structure being sealed for being dilapidated by the Sindh Building Control Authority (SBCA) and the inmates losing cheap rental residence in the city centre.
SHO Preedy Ayub Mirani said the incident occurred near the bus terminal in Saddar, where a portion of the mezzanine floor roof of a residential building suddenly gave way. The falling debris injured a man, who was immediately shifted to Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre for treatment. The injured person was identified as 25-year-old Fazal, reportedly the building’s watchman.
He added that the debris fell onto the ground floor, damaging several motorcycles and cars parked there. According to police, repair and maintenance work was underway in the building at the time of the incident, which likely caused the collapse.
No loss of life was reported. Following the incident, residents closed the building’s entrance. Local residents said construction work was in progress when the accident occurred.
