ISLAMABAD: In a sweeping tariff revision, Nepra has approved a reduction of up to Rs1.16 per unit in electricity base rates for consumers across Pakistan, effective July, as part of the federal government’s move to ease utility costs during FY2025-26.
The authority has determined this uniform tariff across the country, as required under section 31(4) of the Act, also includes the recovery of prior year adjustments (PYA) amounting to Rs58.68 billion, which will be passed on to consumers over the next 12 months.
This decision follows a federal government’s motion it filed last month for uniform tariff and on which the regulator held a public hearing on July 1. The regulator has sent its final decision to federal government for final notification.
Nepra clarified that the inter-Disco tariff rationalisation will not generate revenue for the federal government, and instead, it remains within the consolidated revenue requirement of all distribution companies (Discos) for the year. The federal government would be providing a subsidy of Rs249 billion to different consumer categories during the period.
Under the new tariff structure, protected domestic consumers using 1 to 100 units a month will see their rate reduced from Rs11.69 to Rs10.54 per unit, while those consuming 101 to 200 units will be charged Rs13.01 instead of Rs14.16. For non-protected domestic users, the rate for 1 to 100 units drops from Rs23.59 to
Rs22.44, and for 101 to 200 units, the tariff is cut from Rs30.07 to Rs28.91 per unit. Consumers using 201 to 300 units will now pay Rs33.10 per unit, down from Rs34.26, and those using 301 to 400 units will pay Rs37.99 instead of Rs39.05.
For users in the 401 to 500-unit range, the rate drops to Rs40.20 from Rs41.36. Tariffs for 501 to 600 units and 601 to 700 units have been reduced to Rs41.62 and Rs42.76 per unit, respectively, from Rs42.78 and Rs43.92. Consumers exceeding 700 units will now be charged Rs47.69 per unit, down from Rs48.84. However, life-line consumers using up to 50 units a month will continue to pay Rs3.95 per unit, and those using 51 to 100 units will see no change in their rate of Rs7.74 per unit.
In addition to residential users, Nepra has approved a reduction of Rs1.16 per unit for general services, street lighting and agricultural tube-wells. Industrial users across various categories will also benefit from a tariff cut of Rs1.15 per unit.
