KARACHI:

Leader of the Opposition in the Sindh Assembly, Ali Khursheedi, expressed deep concern over the collapse of a residential building in Lyari, and extended condolences over the loss of lives in the incident.

Khursheedi held the Sindh Building Control Authority (SBCA), a department under the government, responsible for such illegal constructions, alleging that SBCA officials receive hefty bribes for the approval of building plans, allowing for the construction of unsafe and illegal structures, as was, allegedly, the case with the now-collapsed building in Lyari.

Khursheedi stressed that building collapse incidents are rising with alarming frequency, pointing out that a similar incident occurred on Monday, when a six-storey residential building collapsed in Kharadar.

Plazas on small plots

Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) Karachi Ameer Monem Zafar Khan has demanded 6-month rent and alternatives for the victims of a building collapse incident in Lyari area of Karachi, here on Friday.

The JI leader made the demand while visiting the site. It’s a tragedy for the city that multiple story plazas are erected on 40 and 60 yard plots, but neither the government, nor the SBCA takes any notice, he said.

Among 100,000 buildings constructed in the mega city during the past five years, he said, 85 per cent had no formal permission. He held the PPP government in Sindh and the SBCA responsible for the tragedy.
