RAWALPINDI:
The Government Girls Higher Secondary School in Union Council Basali, District Rawalpindi, has been operating without lecturers for its HSSC first and second-year classes since August 15, leaving students without any lessons for nearly two months.
According to school staff, one lecturer retired while the other was transferred, leaving no college teacher available.
As a result, intermediate students attend school daily but return home without being taught.
Matric-level teachers have advised students to transfer to other colleges or higher secondary schools, saying they cannot teach science subjects that require subject specialists.
The annual examinations are due in March-April, but the teaching session has already been reduced to six months.
The staff said they had repeatedly informed the Directorate and the District Education Authority about the lack of lecturers, but no teacher had been assigned so far.
A spokesperson for the education authority admitted that there was an acute shortage of lecturers and subject specialists, which had severely affected the academic system.
To address the issue, the department has started hiring daily-wage school teachers and interns, and the recruitment process will be completed within a month.
Parents Muhammad Saleheen and Abbas Hassan said they had stopped sending their daughters to school because of the teacher shortage. “We enrolled them here because it was close to home. Sending them to the city is not possible, so it’s better to keep them at home,” they said.
