ISLAMABAD:
Deputy Director General (Environment) of the Capital Development Authority (CDA), Irfan Azeem Khan Niazi, announced on Friday that the Prime Minister is placing strong emphasis on the beautification of the federal capital, with plans to inaugurate new flyovers within the next two days and to replace mulberry trees with species more suitable for allergy-prone residents.
The DG told the state channel that two new flyovers at D-Chowk and Shaheen Chowk are scheduled to be inaugurated within the next two to three days, subject to the Prime Minister’s availability.
He underscored that these flyovers form part of ongoing efforts to enhance the city’s infrastructure. The Interior Minister has issued strict instructions to the CDA to ensure that the focus remains not only on timely construction but also on the beautification of the green belts surrounding the structures. This includes the plantation of flowering species to improve the city’s visual appeal and environmental quality.
He further stated that the Faizabad remodelling project — which includes road widening and loop extensions — is nearing completion. These upgrades, he said, will significantly improve traffic flow in the area. He also noted that the beautification of major interchanges is underway, with landscaping and greenery being added to enhance their aesthetic value.
Responding to a question regarding the allergies caused by mulberry trees, he explained that Islamabad’s population was relatively small when the city was first developed. With the rapid increase in population, the problem has become more pronounced. He assured that by spring, Islamabad will be free of mulberry trees, with 75 per cent of the replacement work already completed.
