ISLAMABAD: Federal Energy Minister Awais Leghari has approached Minister of Interior, seeking cooperation for enforcement of Energy Conservation Building Code (ECBC) in Islamabad. In a letter written on May 21 this month to Interior Minister, the energy minister said building sector remains one of largest consumers of energy in Pakistan, accounting for over 60 percent of total demand.
“A significant portion of this consumption stems from inefficient construction practices. Absence of mandatory energy efficiency standards are leading to heightened stress on national grid, particularly during peak summer months”, he said.
The Power Division argued active engagement by Ministry of Interior will serve as a model for other provincial and local governments and significantly contribute to national goals of energy conservation and climate resilience, it said.
Awais Leghari, earlier sent letters to all the chief ministers, Prime Minister of Azad Jammu and Kashmir and federal ministers for planning and science and technology. He urged them to implement ECBC in relevant building laws.
