LAHORE:

Police have registered another case in connection with the embezzlement of nearly 20 kilogrammes of gold from the Ichra Jewellery Market, raising the number of first information reports (FIRs) against the prime suspect to seven.

According to police, trader Waseem Akhtar, already nominated in other cases, has now been accused by his stepmother of absconding with gold she had entrusted to him.

The new case has been registered at Ichhra police station on her complaint.

The complainant told the police that she had handed over more than 2.5kg of gold to Waseem. The market value of the entrusted gold exceeded Rs74.2 million, she stated in the FIR.

Police said that with the registration of the latest case, the total number of FIRs related to the disappearance of around 20kg of gold at Ichhra police station has reached seven. All cases name Waseem as the prime suspect.

Despite the cases, the police have so far failed to arrest the suspect.

However, investigators said they had obtained the suspect’s travel history as part of efforts to trace him.

“Raids are being conducted and the suspect will be arrested soon,” a police official said, adding that investigations were under way to recover the gold and determine whether others were involved in the cases.
