GUJRANWALA:
Amid the ongoing flood crisis in several regions, a total of 633 prisoners, including women and children, have been transferred to Gujranwala Central Jail from flood-affected areas. More than 1,000 inmates have been relocated from Sialkot Jail to other prisons due to deteriorating conditions.
According to reports, torrential rainfall measuring 405mm in Sialkot caused the local stormwater drain to overflow, submerging large parts of the city for several days.
The heavy flooding severely impacted the Central Jail, prompting authorities to take immediate action to ensure the safety of inmates.
Senior jail officials confirmed that over 1,000 inmates were moved from Sialkot to different jails across the region, of whom 633 convicted and under-trial prisoners were shifted to Gujranwala Central Jail, 274 to Narowal District Jail, and 168 to Hafizabad Jail.
Senior Superintendent of Gujranwala Central Jail Chaudhry Muhammad Asghar stated that among those transferred from Sialkot are 565 male prisoners, 12 convicted female inmates, 61 women under trial and seven children accompanying their mothers.
Officials said that once the flood situation stabilises and conditions return to normal, all transferred inmates will be sent back to Sialkot Central Jail under secure arrangements.
