ISLAMABAD:
The district administration on Thursday launched a major crackdown on plastic pollution, sealing a factory in the Sihala area found producing and selling polythene bags in violation of the citywide ban.
According to the administration, the unit was manufacturing and distributing plastic bags despite the prohibition. During the inspection, officials seized around 60 tons of plastic material from the premises, arrested the factory manager, and registered a case under environmental protection laws.
The operation forms part of an ongoing campaign by the Islamabad administration to curb the use of non-biodegradable plastic bags, which are a major cause of pollution in the city’s drainage and waste systems.
Officials said the crackdown will continue across all industrial and commercial zones to ensure strict enforcement of the ban. Teams have been directed to identify and take action against other units involved in similar illegal activity.
Deputy Commissioner Islamabad said that robust measures were being taken to implement environmental regulations and discourage the use of materials harmful to the ecosystem.
He added that awareness campaigns were also underway to promote the use of eco-friendly alternatives among citizens and businesses. The sealed Sihala factory represents one of the largest seizures in recent weeks, with the confiscated plastic set to be disposed of according to environmental safety protocols.
