Emma Stone is taking her fashion cues straight from the ‘90s, and apparently Gwyneth Paltrow.
The 36-year-old Oscar-winning actress was spotted in Midtown Manhattan on Wednesday, Oct. 22, wearing a stunning archival Donna Karan ensemble, the very same look once worn by Gwyneth Paltrow in the 1998 film Great Expectations.
Stone confidently posed for photographers in the streets of New York City, dressed in a vintage long-sleeved silk top with a collar and single clasp, perfectly paired with a matching maxi skirt from Donna Karan’s spring/summer 1996 collection.
She completed the look with a pair of sleek Manolo Blahnik Susa mules in black leather, the classic crossover kitten heels.
Paltrow, now 53, first introduced the iconic silk set to audiences through her role as Estella in Alfonso Cuarón’s Great Expectations, a modern retelling of the Charles Dickens novel.
The romantic drama, written by Mitch Glazer, starred Ethan Hawke as Finnegan “Finn” Bell — a young artist hopelessly in love with Paltrow’s character.
In a 2021 Vogue “Life in Looks” video, Paltrow reflected on the enduring appeal of the outfit, sharing, “So, this is Great Expectations. This was a Donna Karan outfit. All of my clothes in that movie were Donna Karan, pretty much.”
She recalled attending her first costume meeting with the designer, where she was told that “everything in the movie was green.”
Laughing, she added, “Every set, every fabric, every costume. And I thought she was kidding.”
As scenes from the film played over the video, Paltrow explained how it all came together.
“I had remembered that Donna had done a very green collection and it just so happened that it was all kind of perfect, and perfectly nineties, and elegant, and perfect for this character,” she said.
“It’s so funny that this look got so much — and continues to get so much — traction.”
Paltrow went on to say that a “really sexy” moment between her and Hawke helped make the outfit unforgettable.
The scene, where their characters “sort of like make out with a water fountain,” remains one of the most memorable moments in ‘90s film fashion.
“That was a career highlight, by the way,” Paltrow joked.
With Stone’s recent revival of the look, the timeless elegance of Donna Karan’s ‘90s designs proves once again why certain fashion moments never fade — they simply find new life in modern icons.
