ISLAMABAD: The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) Wednesday decided to postpone the by-election for a general seat in Punjab on the eve of polling, owing to the hearing in reserved seats case in the Supreme Court of Pakistan.
According to the schedule announced by the Election Commission, all the related process had been completed and polling was due in the Punjab Assembly Thursday.
A senior official of the Election Commission confirmed to The News that the polling process had been postponed keeping in view the pending case of reserved seats in the apex court and ‘incomplete quorum of seats’.
He explained that the date for the by-election will now most likely to be announced after the issue of reserved seats is settled and the apex court delivers its related judgement.
The general seat had fallen vacant following the passing away of Senator Prof Sajid Mir on May 3, who had made his way to the Senate on the PMLN ticket.
