Dwayne Johnson was overcome with emotion during the premiere of The Smashing Machine at the Venice Film Festival in Italy.

Johnson walked the red carpet with co-star Emily Blunt before the screening. When the film concluded, the audience rose to their feet and delivered a standing ovation that lasted 15 minutes. As the applause grew louder, Johnson wiped away tears, visibly moved by the reception.

The Smashing Machine tells the story of former UFC champion Mark Kerr, whose rise in mixed martial arts earned him his nickname.

Kerr’s career faced turmoil when opioid addiction threatened his future. The film portrays both his dominance in the ring and the personal struggles he faced outside it. Emily Blunt, who stars opposite Johnson, plays the role of a supportive partner who helps Kerr find hope.

Reflecting on the applause, Johnson noted that his thoughts turned to Kerr’s challenges and the awareness the film could bring. His emotional reaction was seen by many as a gesture of empathy.

Following its Venice debut, The Smashing Machine will continue to the Toronto International Film Festival on September 8. A theatrical release in the United States and Canada is set for October 3.
